UPDATED 5:19 P.M.
WASHINGTON, Ill. – A city of Washington garage suffered damage after a fire Friday afternoon that appears to have started in a vehicle.
Washington Assistant Fire Chief Tyler Gee says a call came in just after 2:00 P.M. of a vehicle on fire inside a building at Main and Jefferson St., arriving to find a street sweeper fully engulfed in flames.
He says the fire extended to a dump truck and into the attic before being put out in about 15 minutes.
Fire crews cut holes in the building’s roof to air smoke out of it.
The garage served as the former main fire station for the city of Washington until about 1996, and is currently shared by the public works and police departments. Gee says the public works side received the most of the damage.
Washington was assisted by fire departments from Morton and Eureka-Goodfield.
An official cause and damage estimate is not known at this time, with Gee saying a state fire marshal will need to investigate to determine those, since the fire occurred at a city owned building.
Portions of Main and Jefferson Streets were closed off during the fire.
