The Morton Village Board voted unanimously 6-0 Monday to ban cannabis sales.
The new ordinance applies to cultivation centers, craft growers, processors, dispensaries and transporters from operating in Morton.
The village is allowed to opt out of recreational marijuana sales through an exemption in the state’s Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act.
Gov. J.B. Pritzker last month signed into law a bill allowing recreational marijuana sales in Illinois that goes into effect January 1, 2020.
Under Morton’s ordinance, any business found selling marijuana will face a fine of up to $750 for each offense. The village can tack on more fees each day the violation continues.
