The public can help out the Peoria Police Department by registering security cameras.
With the City of Peoria Electronic Camera Registry, citizens and businesses can register their cameras online, so police know where cameras are throughout the city.
Peoria Police Chief Loren Marion III said the police will not have full access to the cameras.
“All this is, is something that simply gives us the information that the individual has a camera at that location,” Marion said. “And when we look at a crime that has occurred in that general vicinity, we’ll be able to check with the person to see if they have any video evidence of the crime”.
Marion said it is an easy registration process online.
To register, camera owners can go the City of Peoria website and click on Camera Registry.
When registering, the number of cameras and where they are located need to be filled out. One field includes if a camera faces street parking.
“Because when we have cases like vehicle burglaries or something to that effect, we would be able to pull it up and see that the parking on street is covered as well,” Marion said.
Citizens or businesses registering their cameras is a volunteer basis.
“Like we’ve seen in a few previous cases when we have community support and community involvement, we’re able to solve cases quickly,” Marion said.
Those registered with Ring and the Neighbors app are also encouraged to register their cameras with the police as well.
Marion said registering cameras will not take away from neighborhood canvases.
“We will have another asset that can help us,” Marion said. “We will still do that same thing that we do now. But, this will give us further information”.
