A fatality on Rice Lake in Fulton County was from a kayaking accident, according to Illinois conservation police.
The body of a man was recovered from the lake Sunday morning. The victim had been reported in the water Saturday afternoon, but a search was suspended. The victim’s body was recovered after the search resumed Sunday.
Department of Conservation spokesperson Tim Schweizer said the potential drowning was reported at 1:45 p.m. Saturday in Rice Lake near Route 24 in Canton.
An investigation determined two men launched a single kayak around noon Saturday from the Rice Lake boat launch with the intent of fishing near the north end of the lake. The surviving victim reported while crossing the lake, waves created unstable conditions and the kayak capsized.
The man was able to float to shore, but he could not see the other victim and hiked to the campground to seek help.
