Suicide is something that is hard to talk about.
But, organizers of this weekend’s “Whitney’s Walk For Life” say talking about it is one of the best ways to prevent it from happening to someone you know. One of the goals of the annual event is to raise awareness about suicide.
The walk, now in its 16th year, takes place Saturday, July 27, at Jubilee State Park near Brimfield.
Coordinator Morgan Koehler, with the Hult Center for Healthy Living, says “Whitney’s Walk” honors families touched by suicide and clinical depression.
The 5k run begins at 7:55 a.m., the 5k walk begins at 8 a.m.
Koehler tells WMBD’s Greg and Dan, “Since 2004, ‘Whitney’s Walk’ has raised over $1.4 million for the Hult Center’s suicide prevention programs and trainings in Central Illinois.”
The walk’s namesake lost her life to suicide in 2000 at the age of 16.
Koehler said suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States, and the leading cause of death for youth ages 10-14 in Illinois.
“Whitney’s Walk” continues to reach thousands of youth, teaching them the signs of suicide and depression.
Online registration ends at midnight Thursday. On-site registration will be before the walk Saturday.
