Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker has signed legislation to bolster the state’s “Move Over” law.
The legislation increases the penalties for not slowing down and moving over when you see a vehicle with flashing lights stopped on the side of the road.
One new law raises the minimum fine for a first-time “Scott’s Law” violation to $250, and to $750 for subsequent violations. That’s in addition to a new $250 assessment fee that will go toward educating the public about moving over when they see flashing lights.
There will also be higher fines for highway construction zone violations.
“With these laws we are cementing our state’s commitment to safety going forward,” Pritzker said.
Illinois State Police Director Brendan Kelly said another law creates a special task force to come up with other ways to keep first responders safe.
“Looking at how our roads are designed, looking at maybe where the rumble strips are on the side of the road, looking at what types of warning systems could be available to law enforcement,” Kelly said.
Twenty-two Illinois State Police squad cars have been struck by passing motorists this year, killing two troopers.
