Two Peoria firefighters suffered injuries responding to a fire at the McDonald’s restaurant on North Western Avenue Monday afternoon.
Crews arrived just before 4:30, finding a rooftop air handling unit on fire. It was put out using hand extinguishers.
One firefighter suffered smoke inhalation when the unit’s doors were opened and refrigerant escaped.
A second crew member was injured helping him down, falling about 6 feet off a ladder.
Both firefighters were taken to the hospital for evaluation.
The building was ventilated of smoke and the County Health Department was called to the scene to inspect the restaurant.
The building was turned back over to the owner and crews cleared the scene without any further incident.
