Expansions are coming to Dream Center Peoria.
Wednesday the Dream Center celebrated a groundbreaking to kick off the construction of the $1.7 million expansion plans for the facility.
Phase one is the expansion of the homeless shelter.
“We’re going from one floor to two floors. And taking our bed count from around 70 or 80 to around 120 to 125,” Andy King, Executive Director said.
Phase one also includes a rescue room for victims of sex trafficking, and rooms for women who are pregnant.
The goal is to have phase one completed by Dec. 1, before the harsh winter hits.
Phase two includes adding a commercial kitchen.
King said they want to be able to serve guests well.
“Creating a kitchen, we’ll not only be able to do that, but it will be a part of our trade school as well. Teaching kids culinary arts and the whole industry of restaurants,” King said.
King said when you start to get close to poverty, you can start seeing solutions.
“As volunteers and people get close with us, we can do way more and we can impact way more people,” King said.
