Teachers will see an increase in salaries over the next few years.
Democratic Governor JB Pritzker signed a law that will increase teacher salaries to $40,000.
The new legislation is to address the teacher shortage that the state has seen.
The first increase will take place starting Jan. 1 2020, and will increase teacher salaries in phases over the next several years.
The phases are: $32,076 for the 2020-2021 school year, $34,576 for the 2021-2022 school year, $37,076 for the 2022-2023 school year, and $40,000 for the 2023-2024 school year.
According to Pritzker’s office, the minimum salary of a teacher ranges from $9,000 to $11,000, which has not been raised in decades.
According to Illinois State Board of Education data from the 2018-2019 school year, there were 1,848 unfilled teaching positions.
