Hurricane Dorian has weakened to a category 2, however the Federal Emergency Management Agency says that life-threatening winds are still expected.
Trained volunteers from the American Red Cross have been called in to step up for the disaster.
Disaster Leader with the American Red Cross, Valerie Goodwin, said that they have been tracking the storm.
“The National Red Cross staged hundreds of volunteers all along the eastern coast to ensure that we were able to assist our partners, and those communities as well with getting communities ready and getting the evacuation centers open,” Goodwin said.
Over 170 shelters have been opened by the Red Cross, with over 13,000 people occupying the facilities.
“As soon as this definitely looked like it was going to be a storm heading towards U.S. interests,” Goodwin said. “We started paying very close attention and getting ready”.
