Local environmental groups are closer to shutting down the E.D. Edwards coal plant in Peoria County.
The Sierra Club announced in a release on Monday that a proposed settlement between Vistra Energy and plaintiffs the Sierra Club, the Natural Resources Defense Council and the Respiratory Health Association, could close the plant before the end of 2022.
The agreement must still undergo review and be approved by a federal judge.
A lawsuit, filed in 2013, accused the Edwards Plant and its owners of continually violating air pollution emission limits laid out in the Clean Air Act.
About a month ago, Vistra Energy announced it would be closing four Illinois power plants, including two in Canton and Havana.
Illinois Power Resources Generating, LLC has released the following statement:
“The proposed settlement resolves a long-running lawsuit while providing three years of certainty for the more than 70 employees working at the Edwards plant and, importantly, a transition period for the community to plan for the plant closure. IPRG and Edwards look forward to continuing to provide reliable power for Illinois for the next three years while supporting the communities where our employees live and work.”
