(AP) – Illinois has issued about 300,000 state driver’s licenses that are compliant with a 2005 law aimed at strengthening rules for identification at airports and federal facilities.
The State Journal-Register reports that after long delays, the Illinois Secretary of State is now processing thousands of the documents daily.
The licenses that are compliant with the REAL ID Act of 2005 have a small gold circle with a white star in the middle. Those applying for a REAL ID-compliant driver’s licenses need to show additional paperwork to prove their identity.
Starting in October 2020, anyone over 18 who flies or visits military bases will need a REAL ID-compliant document. But, Henry Haupt, with the Secretary of State’s Office, says not everyone needs a REAL ID.
“If you have a valid U.S. Passport or a Military ID, you do not need a REAL ID.”
Haupt says if you do want one, it is important to use the document check list on the Secretary of State’s website before getting in line at a Driver Services Facility.
“It’s very simple to use. And, it’s designed to help ensure that they bring in all of the necessary documents required by the federal government.”
