IDOT is looking for snowbirds.
Snowbird is the Illinois Department of Transportation’s annual program that hires temporary full-time and on-call snowplow drivers in the winter.
Guy Tridgell, spokesperson for IDOT, said now is the time to have people brought on board.
“It’s an important job. You’re out protecting the traveling public by keeping roads passable and clear of snow and ice,” Tridgell said.
Becoming a snowbird can also be another source of income during the snowy months.
“Historically we’ve seen construction workers and those in the agricultural business find a home at IDOT in our snowbird program,” Tridgell said. “But, also anyone who’d be interested in performing a public service and making some extra income in the process.”
Snowbirds are required to respond to emerging weather situations for snow and ice removal, and stay prepared to work in emergency situations at any time.
Those who are interested in applying are required to have a commercial drivers license and agree to a criminal background check.
Also a pre-employment physical, vision testing, and a drug and alcohol tests are required for application.
