Peoria has approved a marijuana sales tax.
Tuesday night, Peoria City Council passed a 3-percent sales tax on recreational marijuana on a 9-2 vote.
City Manager Patrick Urich said, “This does not preclude the council from acting in a matter that might invalidate this action at a later date, when we come forward with a more complete discussion.”
The council’s vote does not address recreational marijuana sales. Council will vote on zoning rules and other ordinances later this month.
“If you decide not to have those zoning regulations at all, you’re making a statement that there are no locations that you will be selling cannabis in the City of Peoria,” Urich said.
Some council members were concerned that the 3-percent sales tax might add to black market sale of cannabis.
A public meeting with the planning and zoning commission regarding recreational marijuana is scheduled for Oct. 3.
The city’s first reading of the planning and zoning ordinance and the possession ordinance is scheduled for October 8, followed by a second reading and City Council vote on October 22.
