Congresswoman Cheri Bustos (D-17) toured the East Bluff Community Center on Monday to learn about its history and contributions.
The East Bluff Community Center is a non-profit organization that aims to help out the community.
“I am always a firm believer that when you bring groups together, non-profits, groups that all have a common theme of wanting to help the community and wanting to help kids, that’s the way to make things happen,” Bustos said.
Bustos said during her tour that community centers are important, especially for kids.
“As a community you have to do everything you can for kids,” Bustos said. “We want to make sure kids know that doing things by the rules is important.”
The Catholic school turned community center hosts activities after school for kids such as the Boys and Girls Club and YMCA basketball programs. The center also hosts a food pantry, a garden, and drug and alcohol rehabilitation counseling services, according to board president, Tim Cunningham.
“This center is really a house for the neighborhood,” Cunningham said.
