SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — With winter 2019 approaching, so, too, is flu season 2019.
In preparation of said season, the Illinois Department of Public Health released a list of tips to defend yourself against the viruses.
First and foremost, the department said, is getting the flu vaccine. IDPH said infants as young as 6-months-old can safely be vaccinated, either by shot or nasal spray.
IDPH also recommended keeping in mind the “Three C’s:” Clean, Cover, Contain.
The department said “Clean” refers to basic hygiene, washing one’s hands frequently with soap and water.
“Cover” means covering one’s mouth when sneezing or coughing.
“Contain” refers to staying home when sick instead of putting others at risk.
IDPH Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike said Tuesday the department started Monday to look at early flu cases to determine whether or not there are any particularly harsh strains this year, a la swine or bird flu.
“We’re just starting to collect data this week on cases of flu, so with time we’ll be able to better assess [any severe strains],” she said.
“But, we’re hoping the flu vaccine is a great match [for any potential deadly strains].”
Ezike said at the end of the day, the vaccine is more about others than self.
“People will say they haven’t been sick before, but I would counter with get it for those you love who are too young to get vaccinated, or are older and infirmed and would get seriously ill should they contract the virus.”
Ezike noted fever, body aches, and general malaise as the typical first signs of the flu.
