PEORIA, Ill. – Illinois is a few months away from recreational marijuana becoming legal, and the Peoria City Council is closer to deciding if recreational marijuana will be sold on the city.
Tuesday night the council discussed how the city can move forward with ticketing for possession of marijuana.
Council passed unanimously to delete section 20-112 pertaining to possession of cannabis or drug paraphernalia.
“They rescinded the ordinances that the city has in place for possession of cannabis under 30 grams,” said City Manager Patrick Urich. “Currently, it would be a city ordinance violation to have that level of cannabis in your possession.”
That ordinance has been removed due to recreational marijuana becoming legal on Jan. 1 2020, it will be legal to have possess that amount of cannabis.
It will still be illegal for those under the age of 21.
The City Council has not legalized marijuana sales, but members discussed where dispensaries and cultivation centers could be located.
During the first wave of 2020, only three recreational cannabis licenses are available in the five county area.
The main concern with dispensary locations is the facility being at least 500 feet away from a school, daycare, or place where minors often congregate.
Councilwoman Denise Moore suggested increasing the distance to 1,000 feet.
