PEORIA, Ill. — A mother and her five children were displaced from their apartment after a Friday afternoon fire.
Peoria crews responded around 2 P.M. to the Landmark Apartments on W. Hillyer.
Upon arrival, light smoke showed from the upper floor.
Crews reported having trouble accessing the affected area because the door was on the backside of the apartment and up a large hill.
Once supply lines were in place, crews had the blaze under control within 11 minutes.
No one was home at the time of the incident.
The Peoria Fire Department estimated about $10,000 worth of damage was done.
“There was a bedroom doorway that was burned up pretty well. The rest of it was just contents of the apartment,” said Battalion Chief Ralph Phillips.
Phillips said the family’s ability to move back in depends on the extent of the smoke damage.
“It did get significantly hot around the ceiling area, but all the unburned gases create that carcinogenic and, basically, it’s fire that’s just not gotten hot enough to light off yet,” he said.
The cause was left undetermined after investigation.
The Red Cross provided assistance to the displaced family.
