SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Move over. It’s the law.
Illinois State Police want drivers to be reminded of “Scott’s Law” after three troopers were struck over just a four-day early November span.
The law makes it mandatory for motorists to slow down and change lanes when they see a trooper car on the side of the road with lights flashing.
Four troopers had already been killed in 2019 when the incidents in early November occurred.
None of the November violations resulted in deaths, but Trooper Mindy Carroll said there’s never a wrong time to remind drivers of the law.
“We’re doing everything we possibly can,” she said.
“We’ve literally written over eight times the total amount of Scott’s Law citations from this time last year.”
The four November violations brought 2019’s number of troopers hit by motorists up to 26, and those are just the ones who had been hit.
“We’re at 5,860 [move over violations],” she said.
“We’re out there, we’re trying, I just don’t know if the message is getting across to people.”
Scott’s Law violations carry a maximum fine of $10,000.
