PEORIA, Ill. — Heavy police activity Thursday afternoon shut down part of Knoxville Ave.
Around 1:45 p.m., U.S. Marshals were searching the 300 block of East Frye for a suspect in connection with a weekend shooting.
Public Information Officer Amy Dotson said shots were exchanged between police and the suspect, identified as 23-year-old Tyshan Gayton.
“The suspect then fled the scene. More officers saturated the area. Upon arrival to the area, an officer thought they spotted a possible suspect,” Dotson said. “Who then ran into a house in the 100 block of East Briarwood.”
The residence was cleared and Gayton was not inside.
During the time of the incident a code red alert was issued and school buses were re-routed to avoid the area.
“At this time the suspect has not been located. He is still being sought by police,” Dotson said.
Gayton is considered to be armed and dangerous. Anyone with any information of his whereabouts is encouraged to call Peoria Police, 9-11, or Crimestoppers at 309.673.9000.
