PEORIA, Ill. — An elderly Peoria woman is dead after suspected elder abuse.
Police responded Tuesday around 2:30 A.M. to the 500 block of NE Monroe after a woman was reportedly breathing but unconscious.
75-year-old Sandra J. Jackson was taken to OSF where she was given aggressive treatment and care, but ultimately succumbed at 2:43 P.M. to her condition.
Authorities were contacted at 6:19 A.M. by the hospital regarding possible elder abuse.
Officers opened up an investigation and spoke to Jackson’s roommate, 41-year-old Dmitri G. Rogatchev, who was arrested for aggravated domestic battery and taken to Peoria County Jail.
After Jackson was pronounced dead, Rogatchev was taken back to the Peoria Police Department, interviewed, and then arrested for first degree murder.
He appeared Thursday in court. His bond was set at $2 million.
Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood said Jackson’s injuries caused intracranial hemorrhages consistent with inflicted blunt force trauma.
“The injuries that we discovered on autopsy were not consistent with what we were originally told regarding a simple fall. So, we knew that the injuries she had were consistent with a perpetrated trauma,” Harwood said.
The Peoria County Coroner’s Office has seen a number of cases where injuries being reported are not consistent with what’s found in the autopsy.
“In those cases, we do figure it out, we do get to the bottom of it, and get justice,” Harwood said.
