PEORIA, Ill. — The 7th anniversary of the Sandy Hook school shooting is Saturday, and a program in Peoria schools was developed to avoid similar tragedies.
They are called “SAVE Promise Clubs.” SAVE stands for “Students Against Violence Everywhere.”
Dr. Susan Grzanich made a presentation to the Peoria Board of Education Monday night on the progress of the program. Several student also addressed the board on some of their projects. Those included a bullying prevention campaign, and a video project designed to help incoming freshman familiarize with their surroundings.
The organization’s website says SAVE Promise Clubs were established and are led by students, and are a powerful approach to preventing gun violence (and other forms of violence and victimization) because they recognize the unique role that young people play in making their schools and communities safer.
A SAVE Promise Club can be a stand-alone club or embedded into an existing club, such as SADD, Student Council, FCCLA, or another student leadership, civic or kindness club.
Twenty children and 6 adults lost their lives in the Sandy Hook school shooting.
