PEORIA, Ill. — The Peoria City Council adopted ordinances for two adult use cannabis dispensaries in the city during Tuesday night’s meeting.
The Planning and Zoning Commission approved on a 7-0 vote both of the locations for dispensaries, which were then recommended for approval by the council.
The dispensaries will be Trinity Compassionate Care at 3125 N. University St. and at the old School House building at 2301 W. Glen Ave.
The location on Glen was approved after a motion to deny from Councilman Jim Montelongo, according to City Manager Patrick Urich.
“They passed on a 7-3-1 vote. Councilwoman (Beth) Jensen had to abstain due to a conflict she had,” Urich said.
Council members Jim Montelongo, Zach Oyler, and John Kelly voted against the location becoming a dispensary.
One concern mentioned from the public for the dispensary on Glen is a school is located close by. However, dispensaries are required to be a certain distance away from schools.
“We set a distance requirement of 500 feet. The location of the dispensary is almost 1,700 feet away from the nearest school,” Urich.
There were other concerns with the location such as increased vehicle traffic in the area, increased foot-traffic, crime, and being close to a residential area.
“We did not have a distance requirement from residential areas,” Urich said.
