PEORIA, Ill. — Festive holiday wreaths at all 12 Peoria fire stations are more than decor.
For the 24th year, fire stations in Peoria are participating in the “Keep the Wreath Red” awareness campaign during December.
Wreaths at all Peoria fire stations are lit up with red bulbs said Division Chief Stan Taylor.
“For every fire we have, commercial fire or residential, we take the red bulb out and put a white bulb in,” Taylor said.
Taylor said the goal is to keep the bulbs on the wreath red.
“We hope it brings awareness when they see the white bulbs on the wreath,” Taylor said.
There was over $872,000 of estimated damage in 2017. In 2018, there were 12 fire related incidents that resulted in $78,500 estimated in damages during the campaign.
The program was created in 1980 by the Illinois Fire Chiefs. Peoria has been taking part in the awareness program since 1995.
