PEORIA, Ill. — With the new year just days away, Illinois drivers need to make sure they know Scott’s Law.
Illinois State Police Sergeant Tony Halsey said the fine for not moving over for state troopers on the side of the road goes up January 1, 2020.
“The penalty is getting stiffer, which it has to. We’ve had 27 state troopers get hit, and two pass away,” Halsey said.
Halsey told WMBD’s Greg and Dan, the minimum fine for violating Scott’s Law will increase from $100 to $250 for a first violation, and $750 for a second violation in 2020.
Illinois drivers may have already noticed a second ISP cruiser pulled over to assist drivers on the side of the road.
“That second car back there…is just in case that car doesn’t get over, and buzz past whatever car is up there with the vehicle broken down,” Halsey said.
Those who violate Scott’s Law and cause an injury or death will be charged with a Class 4 felony.
In 2020, the Illinois Secretary of State will be required to include at least one question about Scott’s Law on the written driving test.
