PEORIA, Ill. — The Peoria Fire Department helped out the community by checking and installing alarms in homes.
In 2019, the PFD helped install 142 smoke alarms and 72 carbon monoxide alarms.
Division Chief, Stan Taylor, said they install the alarms near the sleeping areas.
“It’s important to have smoke alarms outside your sleeping area so it wakes you up in case there’s smoke while you are sleeping,” Taylor said. “It’s very important to be notified as quickly as possible so you can get out and call the fire department.”
The amount of alarms the PFD installed in 2019 is an uptick from the previous year.
“In 2018 we did 92 smoke alarms and 58 carbon monoxide alarms so we’re up significantly,” Taylor said.
The smoke alarms were provided to the fire department from the Be Alarmed! Smoke Alarm Installation Program administered by the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance, at no cost.
Taylor said they want to keep the community safe.
“I think the community appreciates the job we do, and we want to protect them, and we try to get out as often as we can into the neighborhoods,” Taylor said. “We like knocking on doors, getting to meet the people out there and let them know that we do care for them and want to protect them.”
