SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — It’s the kind of gas that is, for all intents and purposes, literally silent but deadly.
Furnaces will be putting out more heat with winter’s arrival, which means an increased risk for the odorless, colorless, but very dangerous carbon monoxide.
The Illinois Fire Marshal has issued some tips on how to make sure it doesn’t hurt you.
“It’s really important to make sure you have multiple alarms, especially carbon monoxide alarms, on each floor,” said Marshal Spokesperson J.C. Fultz.
“Make sure to test those alarms at least once a month, and make sure those smoke alarms in your home are also working.”
Additionally, the Marshal advises never to use a gas generator, grill, oven, or range to heat your home.
If using a space heater, plug them directly into wall outlets and not into extension cords, and keep them at least three feet away from flammable materials.
The office also said to be aware of the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning.
“Some of them mimic the flu,” said Fultz. “Headache, fatigue, shortness of breath, nausea, and dizziness.
“If you experience any of those signs, get out of the house immediately and call 9-1-1.”
Fire departments across the state responded in 2018 to nearly 9,000 carbon monoxide-related calls.
