PEORIA, Ill. — An East Peoria business owner cleared the first hurdle for a marijuana business.
Roy Sorce of Sorce Enterprises petitioned the East Peoria Zoning Board of Appeals Monday for two special permits for a cannabis infusion and growing operation at his business at 3201 North Main Street.
Sorce Enterprises is a food distribution center which provides frozen, refrigerated and dry food items to restaurants around the Midwest.
Sorce told the board the shortage of drivers is hurting his business and the pot operation would prevent him from laying off employees.
Illinois law prohibits a marijuana operation to be located within 1000-feet of a daycare. Rogy’s Learning Place is located across Main Street.
The board approved the permits with the stipulation that the operation would be at least 1000-feet from Rogy’s.
The board also approved a special use permit for NuMed to operate an adult use cannabis dispensary on Riverside Drive.
The permits will now be sent to the East Peoria city council for consideration at their next meeting.
