PEORIA, Ill. — With three bouts of winter weather already in the books for 2020, Peoria Public Works is reminding motorists in neighborhoods those roads may not be as clear as main roads.
The department has a “no bare pavement” policy, which Superintendent Sie Maroon said is basically a disclaimer.
“In a nutshell, when we go in and we plow residential streets from curb-to-curb, we’re just not guaranteeing we can get it down to pavement,” he said.
“I know [residents’] expectation is that they see pavement, but our policy does say we’re not guaranteeing that.”
Maroon explained there is a science behind why such a policy exists, and it has to do with the lack of salt on residential streets, which helps to melt the ice.
“In some cases we will salt residential streets because of ice, but in most cases we don’t.
“By the time we get there, there’s been enough traffic on [residential streets] it packs them down and they’re typically snow-packed or ice-packed.”
The department in 2020 has been utilizing its “A-B-C” system when it comes to residential areas.
This system rotates the order in which streets are plowed.
