PEORIA, Ill. — Peoria firefighters responded just after 6:30 p.m. Wednesday to a home in the 1400 block of N. Douglas on reports of a fire.
Fire Battalion Chief Nate Rice said when crews arrived, the home was filled with black smoke coming from a second story window.
“They took a hose line up to the second floor and found the fire up there. It appeared to be in a mattress,” Rice said.
Crews contained the fire to the bedroom.
“The fire was mainly in the mattress. It may possibly burned the walls a slight bit,” Rice said.
A search found no one was home at the time of the fire.
The Red Cross was called in to assist with temporary housing for one adult and four children.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
