SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — State Representative David Welter, R-Morris, is pushing for a domestic violence task force group.
Welter shared the story of 18-month-old Colton Michael Miller of Joliet, who was shot by his father last September, to explain why this group would be needed.
“I’m sharing this story with you today in hopes that it will serve as a catalyst for members of this general assembly to take action to improve our laws, to better protect the victims of domestic violence,” Welter said. “And, most importantly, to save lives.”
Welter explained that the boy’s mother was also abused by the father, tried to get help from law enforcement and the courts. However, she said she did not get the protection she needed.
He also filed a legislation to improve the laws Illinois has for domestic violence and protect victims.
“Because folks, we need it. In all areas of this state, we need it. Treatment options for victims and offenders,” Welter said. “And, review the need for special consideration for conditions of bail in cases involving domestic violence.”
The task force would take a look at the existing laws and point out any gaps that would need to be filled.
