SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — The ISP wants to beef up the requirements to get a FOID card.
The Illinois State Police said they’ve improved efforts to keep guns out of the hands of those who shouldn’t have them, but more needs to be done.
ISP Director Brendan Kelly said one new resource is a web portal that’s used by more than 600 police departments and criminal justice agencies to help track down people who’ve had their FOID card revoked.
“FOID revocation data now includes the reason for revocation, such as a new offense, a new conviction, a new order of protection, a mental health prohibitor, or clear and present danger prohibitor, as well as firearms transaction histories,” Kelly said.
Kelly is in support of more funding and passage of a bill that would require fingerprints to get a FOID card.
“Will that help us get the job done better…having that fingerprint? The answer is absolutely yes. It is part and parcel of law enforcement. It’s common sense that fingerprints catch bad guys,” Kelly said.
The measure awaits a final vote in the Senate.
