PEORIA, Ill. — A home in the 1400 block of NE Glendale Ave. in Peoria sustained an estimated $50,000 in damage Wednesday morning from a fire.
Crews responded shortly after 9:30 to the scene, where they found heavy smoke emanating from the 2 1/2-story wood frame home.
Battalion Chief Ralph Phillips explained how he estimated the damage.
“There was some structural damage to four joist members, and stuff like that, so that’s something that’s going to be an extensive repair,” he said.
Phillips said it took about 40 minutes to get under control because of the sheer size of the home.
“A lot of those houses, especially at that end of town, are the larger, two- to 2 1/2-story homes, and it’s just a very large structure to deal with when you’re crawling around in zero-visibility conditions,” he said.
No one was home at the time, and five cats and a dog were rescued.
The Red Cross was asked to help with temporary housing for the occupants. The animals were taken to animal control.
