PEORIA, Ill. — The Peoria Park District, among many other organizations across the state and the Peoria area, are taking precautions surrounding the coronavirus.
As of right now, the park district is encouraging people to be smart when going to crowded places.
“We ask people to just use good judgement at this point,” said Executive Director Emily Cahill. “I don’t think we have reason to do anything different than that with the way that our facilities operate this time of year.”
Because we are still in the winter months, the Peoria Park District does not have many large gathering events on the calendar at this time.
Cahill did say that the park district will keep monitoring the situation with the coronavirus as the calendar moves closer to some of the district’s larger events.
“Because it’s cold, not great weather, we really don’t have large gatherings at this point,” said Cahill. “When we get to large scale events the answer might be different, but that’s far enough out in our calendar that we’re really crossing our fingers that all of the prevention work that is happening now will have taken root.”
As of right now, no Peoria Park District events have been cancelled, but Cahill says things will be evaluated as we get closer to warmer months.
Cahill also added that the park district will be in communication with leading experts in the community, such as the health department, to make the best decisions possible.
“Our goal is to make sure that we keep people safe but continue to offer those recreation opportunities that can happen on a daily basis that don’t compromise anybody’s health,” said Cahill.
