SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Illinois lawmakers voted to expand the state’s mail in ballot program.
The Illinois Senate overwhelmingly passed the measure on Friday.
After more than an hour of floor debate, the upper chamber passed the Senate Bill 1863 by a 37-19 vote.
Gov. J.B. Pritzker said he looks forward to signing the legislation when it reaches his desk.
“The right to vote is the foundational pillar of our democracy — and, now, as our elected leaders are making some of the most consequential decisions of our lifetimes, it’s more important than ever that people have every ability to make their voices heard,” said Pritzker. “I encourage all eligible voters to exercise their right to vote at every available opportunity.”
The measure is to make it easier for people to vote from home and avoid possible exposure to the CORONAVIRUS on Election Day.
