SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — A new state law taking effect Wednesday, July 1, takes aim at drivers who end up hurting someone because they are distracted.
“This new law simply increases the penalties for those who through texting while driving, or though using an electronic device, cause a crash that results in severe injuries to another person,” said Illinois Secretary of State Spokesperson Henry Haupt.
Increased penalties include a minimum fine of $1,000 and possible suspension or revocation of a person’s driver’s license.
Drivers in Illinois who fail to yield at a crosswalk or in a school zone and seriously injure a person could also lose their license under a second new law going into effect July 1.
