SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – If your Illinois license plate is in bad shape, the State says it’s probably time to replace it.
If it’s defective, that license plate can be replaced for free from the Illinois Secretary of State.
“If the plate is rusting, or the numbers are degraded and you can’t read them, they’re unreadable, people — drivers, vehicle owners — may call in or report those license plates,” says Kaufman.
If you don’t get the license plates replaced, failure to have readable plates could result in a $164 fine.
“Unreadable license plates are a safety concern, not only for the driver whose driving the car, but the other drivers on the road as well as for law enforcement.”
