Peoria, IL (WMBD) — A labor strike looms large as union workers for tractor giant Deere & Co. have overwhelmingly rejected a new contract offer.
The strike deadline for 10-thousand production and maintenance employees is set for midnight tonight.
Union leaders had already said yes to the deal themselves, but 90-percent of the rank and file workers still rejected it.
The now-rejected offer would have given 5% wage hikes for some workers and 6% for some others.
All of this means there could be work stoppages at more than a dozen Deere & Co. manufacturing plants nationwide.
The strike is set to take place in the middle of the U.S. corn and soybean harvest season, at a time when farmers are struggling to find parts for tractors and combines.
