SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul says he believes Facebook allowed several elite accounts to continue spreading disinformation about the safety of COVID-19 vaccines.
Raoul and 14 other Democratic led state attorneys general are demanding answers on the issue.
They want Facebook to reveal details about a list of elite accounts that held so-called “Cross-Check” protections as laid out earlier by whistleblower Frances Haugen.
Raoul says he’s disturbed to hear that Facebook may have allowed celebrities, politicians and journalists to share “false information related to the COVID-19 pandemic”.
Joining Raoul in sending the letter are the attorneys general of Connecticut, California, Delaware, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont and Virginia.
Reuters reports that back in September, Facebook Inc. had asked an independent Oversight Board for recommendations on how to improve the cross-check system.
