DANVILLE, Ill. – Professional hockey started its regular season this week — unless, unfortunately, you’re the Peoria Rivermen.
The Rivermen were to start the season this weekend against the newest member of the Southern Professional Hockey League – the Vermilion County Bobcats.
The league says the opener in Danville has been postponed due to ice conditions that prevented the Bobcats from holding a proper training camp.
“I am extremely disappointed for the Bobcats organization and players and the Vermilion County hockey fans who were excited to see professional hockey for the first time in over a year and a half,” said SPHL Commissioner Doug Price, in a news release. “But as a matter of safety for the players, it was necessary to postpone these games.”
The series will be made up at a later date. The Rivermen’s 40th season will now begin at home next weekend against the Macon Mayhem.
