KNOX COUNTY, Ill. — Illinois State Police say a man was killed and another man was injured in a head-on collision on I-74 early Sunday morning.
The crash happened around 4:25 a.m., near mile marker 52 in Knox County.
ISP says a 35-year-old Mackinaw man was driving eastbound when his car struck another vehicle driven by a 41-year-old Peoria man going westbound in the eastbound lanes of Interstate-74.
The Mackinaw man was pronounced dead at the scene while the man from Peoria was taken to a hospital with head injuries.
The Peoria man was charged with Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol, Improper Lane Usage, Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident, and Operating an Uninsured Motor Vehicle.
Eastbound lanes of I-74 were closed to traffic for several hours for investigation and clean up.
Eastbound I-74 was reopened around 9 a.m.
The ISP’s Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit is overseeing the investigation.
