CHICAGO, Ill. – Is the State of Illinois finally turning the corner on COVID-19 as the Omicron and Delta variants have taken their toll?
With overall daily case numbers and hospitalizations seemingly declining in the state, Governor JB Pritzker says, maybe.
“I am cautiously optimistic about this decline,” said Pritzker, at a news conference Wednesday in Chicago. “But, there are an awful lot of people still battling for their lives in hospitals across Illinois.”
There are many in Peoria who may not get the COVID-19 vaccine ever, no matter how much you may try to convince them.
But, as the average number of new COVID cases statewide and hospitalizations are starting to trend downward, Governor JB Pritzker says, think again.
“In the first two weeks of 2022, 14,000 new people have gotten their first vaccine dose every single day in Illinois,” said Pritzker. “That’s around 100,000 newly-vaccinated people — about the population of Peoria — every week.”
Pritzker says he’s continuing to push the message that vaccines work, masking works, and all the other guidelines and recommendations that have been put in place are also working.
He says he’s cautiously optimistic things are getting better after the surge in cases due to the Delta and Omicron variants, and believes the vast majority of new cases remain among the unvaccinated.
