SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Do you have a storm kit?
It’s Severe Weather Preparedness Week, and the Illinois Emergency Management Agency wants to help keep your family safe in the event of severe storms.
Getting set up in case of tornadoes, heavy storms and the like includes putting together an emergency kit with first aid supplies as well as enough food and water for three days.
Being ready for anything, having a family communication plan, and knowing the biggest weather threats in your area are also important.
“Some folks live in low-lying areas, and they are subsequently maybe used to a little more flooding. Or, some of the areas that are a little less protected during high-wind events or even tornadoes, they could be put in danger due to the flying debris,” said I-EMA Spokesperson Kevin Sur.
Sur says it’s also a good idea to get a NOAA Weather Radio.
“We want to make sure that people are alert and ready to go. They should know the difference between watches and warnings and advisories, and know that whatever action happens, that they need to take the right level of action with increased notification,” Sur said.
The Illinois Emergency Management Agency recommends checking out ready.illinois.gov for all sorts of information ranging from what to do during a tornado, to flood clean-up.
