PEORIA, Ill. — What was believed to be a hazardous materials incident closed part of a Peoria neighborhood Friday evening until crews deemed it a false alarm.
Peoria Police got a call just before 5 p.m. about a suspicious package on Ravinwoods Road, near the corner of W. Valleyview Court.
The area was blocked off for about three hours and neighbors were not allowed into to their homes.
Division Chief of Operations Rick Morgan said inside the package was a white powdery substance, which led first responders to call in a hazmat crew.
Morgan added it took a few hours to test the proteins in the powder, and eventually, the substance was deemed ‘non-hazardous’.
“If it is unknown, we always like to do decontamination, just because we don’t know what it is,” Morgan told 25 News. “We want to make sure everything is safe before we return to residents and community back over to their residence.”
Ravinwoods Road was reopened around 9 p.m., and the package was turned over to the PPD’s Crime Lab for further testing.
No injuries were reported.
