SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Illinois House Democrats have put together new legislation addressing Russia’s war on Ukraine.
The bill’s sponsor, Rep. Lindsey Lapointe, of Chicago, said this is one of the most comprehensive state responses to the war.
“It puts Illinois on a path to divest from Russian stocks and sovereign debts, including money that’s in the teacher’s retirement system and funds that the Illinois Board of Investments oversees,” Lapointe said.
Lapointe added that Russia’s war ally Belarus is also targeted for divestment in the bill.
The legislation also creates a Ukrainian refugee settlement program and sets up a state money laundering and real estate task force to weed out illicit connections to Russia.
“Making it easier to provide health care, mental health services and English language assistance to Ukrainian nationals who are granted temporary protected status or refugee status,” Lapointe said.
Illinois House Republicans have introduced similar legislation in response to the war on Ukraine.
