SPRINGFIELD, Ill – While we’re waiting on corn and soybeans to grow in Illinois, believe it or not, there’s some harvesting going on.
The USDA weekly Crop Progress Report for Illinois shows a big jump in the harvest, week over week, of winter wheat.
“Winter wheat harvested for grain was 66 percent, compared to the five-year average of 57 percent,” said Steve Harn, USDA Illinois Crop Statistician. “Winter wheat condition was rated four percent very poor, nine percent poor, 19 percent average, 54 percent good, and 14 excellent.”
Meanwhile, the condition of the corn crop dipped slightly, but is still at 70 percent good to excellent shape. Soybeans are at 66 percent good to excellent.
Farmers had, on average, just over six days for field work, which they used to harvest winter wheat in large part. Rain was, about average, but there are some parts of the state that are close to drought status.
