PEORIA, Ill. — The Peoria County Board of Health has voted in favor of the much-debated “Cure Violence Assessment”.
After lengthy discussion Monday, the board approved a $25,000 dollar assessment of where and how violence is plaguing Peoria, as a public health crisis.
One health department staffer told the board that studies have shown the cure violence model has been effective in other, similar sized areas.
“Knowing that our black males, between the ages of 15-24 have disproportionately affected and we’ve been looking for several years at solutions to this problem,” said Katy Endress, Director of Epidemiology and Clinical Services at the Peoria Health Department.
According to 25 News, funding for the assessment would come from the board’s existing revenues and would be used if the City of Peoria decides not to conduct its own assessment, something council has already rejected twice.
Peoria City Council is set to discuss the “Cure Violence” assessment again Tuesday night.
