PEORIA, Ill. — We’re learning more this week about plans for layoffs at a large electric car maker in Illinois.
Earlier this week, a spokesperson for Rivian, which operates a large manufacturing facility in Normal, announced the company will reduce its workforce by nearly 6 percent.
The spokesperson said that the decision would, “align our workforce to our key business priorities, including ramping up the consumer and commercial vehicle programs, accelerating the development of R2 and other future models, deploying our go-to-market programs and optimizing spend across the business.”
Rivian has been planning to build another EV manufacturing plant in Georiga, which would supply around 7,500 jobs there.
However, there are more details available now about how the laid off workers will be handled.
Roughly 840 workers will be losing their positions at Rivian.
According to 25 News, a severance offered to employees includes 14 weeks of paid severance, health care and fertility benefits through end of year, the fulfillment of their next scheduled quarterly equity vesting and job placement assistance.
