PEORIA, Ill. – If you’ve seen a police presence and crime scene tape around some Peoria gas stations Wednesday, you’re not alone.
Problem is, we can’t tell you much about what may be going on at local Shell stations in Peoria, along with one near the Paradice Casino in East Peoria.
Peoria Police told us to contact the Illinois Department of Revenue. And when we did, a spokesperson suggested an investigation was going on. But they can’t otherwise comment on investigations.
“Our Bureau of Criminal Investigations conducts investigations of potential violations of the Illinois tax laws and related offenses and, if warranted, refers the matter for criminal prosecution,” said Maura Kownacki, spokesperson, Illinois Department of Revenue. “The Illinois Department of Revenue cannot comment on the status of ongoing investigations, however, or even acknowledge their existence due to confidentiality provisions in the tax laws.”
Peoria County GIS records indicate all the stations in question are owned by Axis Investments, LLC of Louisville, Kentucky.
