PEORIA, Ill. — It seems scammers are up to their old tricks again in the Peoria Area.
Ameren Illinois’ Brian Bretsch says scammers are targeting small local businesses, in particular those where language may be a barrier, and elderly customers demanding payment.
“Scammers can be very demanding, and in that demand, they’re going tell you that you are in the rears, and that you need to make immediate payment within the next 45 minutes to two hour time frame,” Bretsch says.
Ameren will never ask you for immediate payment over the phone, or ask you to pay with pre-loaded card or cash app.
Bretsch says, “If you are behind on your bill, Ameren Illinois will instead work with you to set up a payment plan.”
If you receive a scam call, write down the number, then hang up.
Ameren Illinois says it’s important to report scam numbers to right away at (800) 755-5000.
